The Four Types Of Espresso Machines

When shopping for an espresso machine it can get a little overwhelming with the huge number of makes and models however things become a little simpler if you remember that there are really only four major types you need to understand:

Certainly the most traditional style, manual espresso machines were the first machine invented to make espresso. It has a piston that requires a pull to force the water through the coffee grounds. This may not be the way to go for the average coffee drinker as the consistent pulling of the piston requires time and practice to master.

While considerably easier to use than a manual espresso machine there is still a certain amount of control by the user over the finished product. Semi-automatics are the most common and least expensive of the four types of machines and are suitable for those who do not mind learning a little skill to make a wonderful espresso. This type of machine does not typically come with a grinder.

There is not a great difference between fully and semi-automatic machines except for the fact that with a fully automatic espresso machine the user has no control over the extraction process once they have turned the unit on. There is little difference in espresso quality but of course the benefit is that there is very little in the way of skill necessary to operate a fully-automatic machine. Also called One Touch machines the Impressa C9 and Impressa S9 are two great examples.

Finally, as the name suggests super-automatic machines pretty much take care of everything for you. The machine will grind the coffee, tamp the ground beans into the filter and extract the concentration to your preset volume. There are usually several controls available to adjust things such as strength and amount brewed. These machines represent the latest in technology but of course they usually carry a price tag to match. The Impressa Z5 sets the benchmark in ultimate super-automatic espresso machines currently on the market.

Take the time to understand the differences between these types of machines and the process of purchasing an espresso machine should be made simpler.
