In a deal that was definitely overshadowed by the monumental transactions involving Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams, the Atlanta Hawks shook up their struggling backcourt by acquiring Kirk Hinrich from the Washington Wizards. The Hawks also received forward Hilton Armstrong in exchange for guards Mike Bibby and Jordan Crawford, forward Maurice Evans and a first round pick in the 2011 NBA Draft. Atlanta is hoping to shake up a lineup that started the season strong but slumped heading into the All Star Break.

Starting QB Chad Pennington went 8 of 11 for 105 yards and a touchdown pass as the Miami Dolphins first team offense played well in a 27-17 victory over the Carolina Panthers. The Dolphins improved to 2-0 in the NFL preseason while the Panthers dropped to 0-2. While it is only preseason action, a victory is still a victory and no team likes to go down to defeat in back to back weeks. Manchester United is in good shape to advance to the Champions League soccer quarterfinals following a 3-2 win over AC Milan at the San Siro. The competition itself was overshadowed by the fact that it was the first time that David Beckham had played against his old team since leaving Old Trafford in 2003, and Wayne Rooney squashed Milan’s early hopes with two goals to put the game on ice. How quickly things have changed for the Utah Jazz-in just two weeks longtime coach Jerry Sloan abruptly quit and now the team has traded their franchise player. On Wednesday, Utah sent All Star point guard Deron Williams to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for guard Devin Harris, forward Derrick Favors, a pair of first round draft picks and cash. The Nets had been hoping to acquire Denver’s Carmelo Anthony, but Williams-arguably the best point guard in the NBA-is a very good ‘consolation prize’.
